My next log hive to bee…When I was puzzling over what unique carving I should have on it, what indeed, could possibly be a step up from Bee Beard or Bee-atrice, my paper salesman, John Wise, suggested a carving of my three grand kids. It didn’t take me long to realize they would be perfect. I better check with Brian Vorwaller, the wood carver.
Measuring the log to determine how much surface area is needed for three faces.
Brian draws the place he wants the bee cavity. We’ve got to leave about a 4 inch thickness for the kids’ faces.
Now I know how to start making a hollow tree hive! I look forward to seeing how the 3 kids hive proceeds. I presume you keep the bees as pets and not for honey? Amelia
I can’t wait to accomplish the next step. The big lengthwise cut. Hope it works out well.
I wouldn’t characterize the bees as pets really, but this is our attempt to provide a potential hive for them, grow many bee-loving flowers in a poison-free environment, and let the bees do their bee thing without intervention. Once I set the log upright in place, it’ll be ‘yard art’ until a swarm of bees decides to move in. It’ll be their choice and of course, I’m not going to rob any honey. What do I get in return? Pollination services and UNLIMITED photo opportunities. 🙂
It only seems like yesterday that Beetrice was carved, I look forward to watching the progress on the Three KIds.
The idea for the Bog Log is still smouldering, although I think it’s going to be a while yet, but I’ll be keeping a close eye on your progress to pick up tips on hollowing out 🙂
I hope to get on with the next phase next week. I’ve been thinking about it long enough, now I’ve got to make the all important ‘long cut’ (and get it right), then real progress can be made.
A “bog log?” I like it!
Save your sawdust and grow oyster mushrooms on it!
I’ve grown oyster mushrooms in coffee grounds before…

I might just have to try them in the sawdust. Thanks for the idea.
Always fun to see what you are up to. 🙂
Yep…I’m always up to something. 🙂
Geez, I wished you delivered overseas. I would love to have one of these!
It’s basically a labor of love…not really sustainable, but if the bees like it, it’ll be worth it.

What a wonderful idea for your next hive. Can’t wait to see how it turns out!

I’m thinking that Toilet Tree might sound a bit better? 🙂
Please keep us posted on this one. Looks like it will be interesting. I’d also like to see the construction process.
I made a lot of progress yesterday and today. I’ll be posting soon. Bear in mind I’m no expert here, “just playing around.”
